| Hinton | Wayne Little | In Hinton, Alberta there is a road we call Miette Hot Springs Road, it leads up to a Hot Spring, obviously. Its halfway in between Hinton and Jasper off Hwy 16 (Yellowhead) or approx. 35 km west of Hinton it heads south for about 17 km. There 110 turns/curves and some cracks in the road that were repaired with tar that gets kinda slick when its hot, 25C or higher, and there are a few tourists traveling up there at the posted speed limited or less of 50 km/h. | ||
| Cochrane | Canmore | Highway 1A | Wayne Janz" | Start at the junction of highway 22 and 1A on the west side of Cochrane. The first 15 or 20 minutes of the ride are on nice pavement, but not a lot of curves. But after passing Ghost Lake and leaving all the RVs behind, the twisties become more frequent. At this point you enter the forested hills of a native reserve loaded with many tight turns. Unfortunately the pavement starts to break up here as well, but traffic is light and radar is very rare. Passing through the reserve you enter the beginnings of the Rockie Mountains. Here again the pavement improves, but you may run into a large truck or two hauling cement from the limestone mining operations at Exshaw. Once through Exshaw, the last 15 minutes of the ride into Canmore is on excellent pavement through the mountains with long sweeping curves. The one-way trip takes about an hour. |
