Sylamore (east) Melbourne Hwy 9 Bill Swartzwelder Watch for farm tractors on this section
Melbourne (east) Batesville Hwy 69 Bill Swartzwelder Very twisty, some cliffs on roadside
Paris (south) Junction Hwy 10 Hwy 309 Bill Swartzwelder This takes you over Mt. Magazine (highest point in AR), watch for sand in the spring, very steep and twisty

Mena Junction Oklahoma Hwy 259 and OK Hwy 1 Hwy 88 Bill Swartzwelder Take Hwy 88 west (when in crosses into Oklahoma it becomes Hwy 1). When you reach the junction of Hwy 259 and Hwy 1, turnaround and ride it back.
Mt. Ida Dardanelle Hwy 27 Bill Swartzwelder Very little traffic on this 65 mile section.
Story Junction Hwy 298 and Hwy 7 Hwy 289 Bill Swartzwelder Start at the Junction of Hwy 27 and Hwy 298, 30 miles route. Little population, lots of turns.
Junction US 71 and Hwy 28 Ola Hwy 28 Bill Swartzwelder The Junction of US 71 and Hwy 28 is about 25 north of Mena, AR. The route is about 45 miles and has hairpins at the end of long straights.
Harriet (Junction of Hwy 27 & Hwy 14) Yellville Hwy 14 Bill Swartzwelder This one is a doozy (about 25 miles). WARNING, if traveling south there is a very sharp curve at the end of the Buffalo River bridge. There is a beautiful campground at Buffalo Point state park on the river.
Visit Bill Swartzwelder's web site for an interesting, well-done collection of "ride videos!"
Benton Hot Springs Hwy 5 Robert Duncan Take HWY 5 out of Benton all the way into the downtown historic district of Hot Springs. If you're really adventuresome and have the time cut off onto HWY 7 at Fountain Lake, go north through Russellville, on up into Harrison and back down into Conway on HWY 65. About 7 - 8 miles out of Harrison you can take 62/412 over to Yellville and then 14 down into Alison and hwy 9 (turns to hwy 16, not sure where) back over to 65. This is almost a must do, it runs you down into the Buffalo River Valley. Average auto speed through most of this area is about 35 - 40 tops. Benton to Hot Springs is about 38 miles. The Hwy 7 cutoff is about 30 miles out of Benton. Hwy 7 to Russellville is right at 60 miles, Russellville to Harrison is 80 and Harrison down to Conway is 105 miles. Conway back into Benton, via Interstates, is almost 50 miles. Bill Swartzwel listed (above) a couple of these routes and he is right on the money.
Alma Fayetteville Old AR71 Sherman McCoy OLD AR71 from Alma (I-40) to Fayetteville. I-540 / New AR71, has made this into an abandoned highway. The 12 mile leg from Alma to Mountainburg SUCKS. Crappy surfaces and a lot of traffic / cops. The 24 mile leg from Mountainburg to Winslow is sexual. 3 and 4 lane 15 to 25 mph sweepers. If you don't drag a toe slide on your boots through here... you ain't riding!

AR123 from AR164 (N in between Russellville and Clarksville) This is my second favorite highway. At Hagerville (AR164), you can go west to Clarksville (AR21) or east to Pelsor (AR7). If you go east, it's 28 miles of beautiful twisties. Zero traffic and cops. Good road surface. NOTE: AR123 continues NE from Lurton (AR7) for about 11 mile of great new pavement and... without warning, turns to gravel! AR154 from AR7 at Centerville to AR9 at Oppelo. This goes over Petit Jean Mt. / Park. AR16 / AR9 from Clinton to Mt. View. 1st leg to Shirley is the best part. AR263 from AR92 by Brownsville to AR14 by Big Flat. Has some really great parts and some really bad surfaces (especially around Fox to Onia). AR58 from AR14 (E of Mt. View - fun too) to AR69 at Sage. The folks at Sony PlayStation must have designed this road. From AR14 to Guion is real wide and has some 40 mph chicanes that you can FLY on. County deputies like to hang around just N of Guion. It's gets a lot tighter from Guion to Sage. THE HOLY GRAIL AR341 from AR14 by Big Flat to AR5 by Norfork. The 17 miles starting from AR14 is the best part. The road surface isn't as good from the last 7 or 8 miles. David Edwards, the editor of CYCLE WORLD wrote about this highway in the Jan. '00 issue. In the Feb. '00 issue, "Tour Arkansas" ranked in the top 10 (I think) in "101 Things To Do Before You Die". Waaaaaaaaay before ANY other state! As you can tell Mt.View is kind of an "epicenter" of good highways. Many of our best are within 25 miles of Mt. View. There's a Best Western right in the middle of town (at the intersection of AR5-9-14). There are a few more hotels / motels (most N of the BW) and several fast food places. Heck, there's even a Wal-Mart near by.

Mountainview Mountain Home Hwy 87, 14 and 341 Kevin Doherty Head north on Hwy 87 to Hwy 14, north on 14 to Hwy 341. This road goes through the national forest Lots of very smooth pavement with fast and slow curves and switchbacks. Paved shoulders and wide lanes. very little traffic. This is an awesome road that must be seen to believe. Very fast and very smooth.

AR 123 from intersection of AR374 near Vendor Intersection of AR 7 & AR 16 AR 123 Paul Bailey AR123 from intersection of AR374 near Vendor South to intersection of AR7/16. Road consists of new pavement for approximately 17 miles. North end of the route begins with a some technically challenging switchbacks. Beautiful scenery (when you can afford to look) and great road conditions. Recommend the North to South direction as the most fun as it is uphill rather than the South to North putting the really tight switchbacks in a downhill situation.
See notes   AR 263 Dan Jasa A great road is AR 263 which is right near the beginning of AR341 N. This is an awesome road with many up downs with curves in the middle. And the best part is that it follows a creek (very awesome scenery) This is a good road to go on if you go from 14 across the Buffalo River then 263 and then 341. Three great roads within 5 mi. Just thought you might want to add that one...oh yeah great pavement and little traffic.

Editor NOTE: AR 263 is found in the North Central section of Arkansas. The Junction of 14 and 263 can be found at the SW corner of the Ozark National Forest.

1. Road changes name several time on the way south. Coming north (from Benton) you have to look hard to find the road (known as Congo Road at this end). Going south just follow the yellow caution signs on the curves. Road conditions--Swoops, dives, twists and turns. Smooth pavement and pretty scenery. There are very few gas stops along the way. Also, very limited number of straight-aways long enough for safe passing.
