| Wickenburg | Prescott (or beyond) | US 93 to Hwy. 97 to Hwy. 96 east to 89 north | Christine Raasch | An longer alternative to Yarnell Hill for the slightly less squidly (or if you want to avoid the speed trap often set up there). Sweepers and whoop-de-doo hills, beautiful countryside, zero traffic. Rejoins 89 south of the excellent pre-Prescott twisties. |
| Phoenix--Cave Creek Road | Bartlett Reservoir | Cave Creek Road, Bartlett Lake Road | Christine Raasch | Starts out as a cruise through the funky town of Cave Creek. Opens up as you get out of town, then Bartlett Lake Road provides some nice twisties and fast sweepers. Keep an eye out for sand. After a view of the lake at the boat fee area, return to Cave Creek and have lunch at the Satisfied Frog. |
| Apache Junction | Tortilla Flat | Apache Trail (Hwy. 88) | Christine Raasch | Very twisty road out to Canyon Lake. Can be choked with tourists and boat-trailers on weekends. Breakfast or lunch at Tortilla Flat is a must. The road continues on about 5 miles past Tortilla Flat then turns to graded dirt. |
| Phoenix | Payson (or beyond) | Hwy. 87 - Beeline Highway | Christine Raasch | Fast sweepers and nice countryside. |
| Intersection of Hwys. 87 and 188 | Globe | East on Hwy. 188, continue east on Hwy. 88 | Christine Raasch | Sweepers to Roosevelt Lake, then some nice twisties on 88. From Phoenix, 87-188-88-60 makes a nice loop. Lunch at Guayo's on 88 or Guayo's El Rey in Miami. Avoid speeding around Globe (DPS training area)! |
| Globe | Show Low | US 60 | Christine Raasch | The Salt River Canyon twisties are worth doing at least twice! The rest is open country and nice views. From Phoenix, can be part of a large loop (87-260-60), or out-and-back (60). 60 from Phoenix to Globe through the Superstition wilderness is also twisty and scenic but has lots of truck traffic. |
| Jacob Lake | Grand Canyon North Rim | Hwy 67, Cape Royal Drive | Christine Raasch | Good addition to southern Utah trip. Sweepers leading into park. Stop for obligatory views at Lodge, then go back to Cape Royal turnoff: 23 miles of woodland views and twisties, tons of fun! Watch for occasional bumps, and, of course, slow-moving tourists. |

1. Go south on Central Avenue, you'll end up at the entrance to "South Mountain Park"... About a 8-10 mile road to the top of a mountain that overlooks the city (about 2,500+/- feet above Phoenix), paved (currently not in the greatest shape) and steep cliffs on one side...be careful as some turns have no guard rails and be careful of hikers and bicyclists...
2. Just before Yarnell the road goes up the side of a mountain. There is approximately 6 miles of pure high speed twist. The road is two lanes going up the mountain. At the top there are some 20 mph hairpins. Yarnell to Prescott is straight but the view is great. In Prescott, stop and have lunch on "whiskey row." From Prescott head to historic Jerome by following Hwy 89 and exiting on 89A. Traffic through Oakcreek Canyon can be heavy but the road is great.
Christine Raasch's take on Note 2: "Yarnell to Prescott starts out fairly straight with a few sweepers, but the last 10 miles are truly excellent twisties, much tighter than the Yarnell Hill curves. The road crosses scenic Prescott National Forest land and the pavement is smooth and mostly gravel-free. Between Prescott and Jerome on 89A is another set of twisties, repaved in 2002 and quite nice (updated 12/23/02) and traffic heavier. Jerome is a great place for lunch (try the Haunted Hamburger for a nice view), but on weekends it can be a zoo." Editor Note: Streets & Trips 2001 confirms Chris' observations.
3. On the Eastern border of the state, it's 94 miles of twisties, switchbacks and sweepers with a stretch of meadow-lined straight-aways in the middle, just to let you catch your breath. This one's a sportbike nirvana. The traffic is light (too twisty for cages). This is a "twist and shout" run and when you're done, you'll want to turn around and do it again.
