Colorado Sport Bike RoadsThings you need to know about Colorado sport riding:
Carry vehicle registration
Carry an "up-to-date" insurance card
DO NOT speed on weekends. A sport bike traveling with a pack of speeding automobiles WILL BE singled out and stopped!
Just thought you should add a note under the Colorado section about how Colorado uses sand to melt snow so many of the sharp turns and switchbacks are covered in sand until late spring. -Josh Keller
| Start At | Finish At | Highway(s) | Submitted by | Notes |
| Laporte | Rustic | Us 287 to Hwy 14 | YTK | Laporte is just north of Ft. Collins. See 1 below. |
| Carbondale | Marble | Hwy 133 | Anson Fogel | 40 miles and good surface as of 4/6/97. Editor's Note--rode this highway on 8/8/98 and found it one of the better, less traveled roads in Colorado. |
| Aspen | "The end of the road!" | Bush Creek Road | New pavement, low traffic, curvvvvey! | |
| Aspen | Junction CO 82 and US 24 | CO 82 | See 2 below | |
| Boulder | Ward | Hwy 36 to Lefthand Canyon Dr. | Pete Adamkovics | Head north from Boulder on Hwy 36. Lefthand Canyon Dr. is about 5 mi. north of Boulder, head west to Ward. Once at Ward, head south to Nederland on Hwy 72. |
| Nederland | Boulder | Hwy 119 | Pete Adamkovics | Hwy 119 for this section is known as Boulder Canyon Dr. |
| Junction I25 & C470 | "The end of the road!" | Deer Creek Canyon & Turkey Creek Canyon | Pete Adamkovics | Take C470 west to Wadsworth. Its tricky finding Deer Creek Canyon (look for S. Platte Canyon Rd., take it south about 1/4 mile and then head west on Deer Creek Canyon). Follow Deer Creek Canyon until it ends at Turkey Creek Canyon. Follow Turkey Creek Canyon until it ends--time to head back. Turkey Creek Canyon has houses and driveways, so be careful! |
| Lyons | Estes Park | Hwy 7 | Matthew Barrett | Take Hwy 7 out of downtown? Lyons. Wonderful road if the weather is right, most of the was redone in 1997. Both Lyons and Estes Park are great for lunch and the welcome bikers. |
| Hotchkiss | Gunnison | Hwy 92 | YT K | The 11 miles from Hotchkiss to Crawford is boring, after that--WATCH OUT! This road is not for the weak heart; no guard rails, drops all the way to hell. Fairly good road surface, and not much traffic during the week. This route is safer if ridden Gunnison to Hotchkiss--you'll see why. |
| Golden (about 5 miles north) | About 15 miles south of Nederland Highway | Jamie Dickens | Coal Creek Canyon Start: Jct. Hwy 72 and Hwy 93 about 5 miles north of Golden on Hwy 93. Finish: Jct.. Hwy 72 and Hwy 119 about 15 miles south of Nederland Highway: West on 72 approx. 15-20 miles Comments: most roads in the Denver area heading into the mountains are pretty busy with traffic. This one is less busy than most. | |
| Golden | Golden Gate Canyon Road | Jamie Dickens | Start: Golden, CO Finish: Jct. Hwy 119 and Golden Gate Canyon Road Highway: West on Golden Gate Canyon Road. Approx. 20 miles Beautiful scenery tight twisties at the beginning. Careful of cops though, sometimes they are up there and there is no other roads to turn off onto if you are looking to get away. (unless you don't mind dirt roads) These two previous roads make a pretty good loop for an afternoon ride. they are connected by Hwy 119 at the west ends. | |
| Canon City | Cripple Creek | Hyde Park Road | Jamie Dickens | Start: Canon City, CO and go west on Hwy 50, North/West on Hwy. 9, North on Hyde Park Road, East on Hwy 1. Approx. 60 miles. Comments: Great road, little or no traffic, plenty of passing areas, recently paved, the corners are not marked however and the road goes through an open range so watch out for cattle... |
| Montrose | Durango | US-550 "The Million Dollar Highway" | Jack Gustafson | MILEAGE: 106 miles NOTES: Starts out slow - flat and straight. A few sweepers approaching Ouray. At the south end of Ouray the road makes a sharp uphill turn to the right and from there on it gets interesting. WARNING: This is not exactly a sportbike road for the whole distance, with logging trucks and other semi's going both directions at least part of the way. But this is where switchbacks were invented (or at least perfected) and there are places where you can open the bike up and let it sing. If 10 mph curves whet your appetite, try this one. |
| Hwy 7, south of Estes Park | Central City | Peak-to-Peak Hwy | David Solomon | Peak to Peak starts off as Hwy 7 going south out of Estes Park. You then turn right onto Hwy 72 after Allenspark. At some point it magically turns into 119 south, somewhere south of Nederland, and continues to Central city. Check out a map, as it sounds more complicated than it is. |
| Delta | CO 65 & CO 92 | Tom Settlemier |
1. From Delta head east on 92,
then left on 65, short but sweet. 2. Start in Delta, head east on 92 past 65 to 133, head north. Longer and higher speeds. When you come to hwy 82 turn right to Aspen, have lunch, then head east out of town over Independence pass, lots of switch backs, very tight, watch out for the sport cars passing. 1. Hwy 14 exits US 287 to the west just north of Laporte. Hwy 14 through Poudre Canyon, along the Poudre River, is curvy and scenic. Traffic on weekends is a joke. I was last through this area in 8/94 and the road had a great surface.
2. Highest paved pass in the USA, good surface, traffic high on weekends. The most beautiful pass in Colorado. Eat in Aspen, great restaurants and a gem of a Cigar Bar.
