Conowingo Dam (Jct US 1 & Susquehanna River) Fawn Grove, PA US 1, MD 623, PA 851 William Lamb This is a combination of Maryland and Pennsylvania roads, far from most anything and everything. It starts at the Conowingo Dam in Maryland, where US-1 crosses the Susquehanna River. On the West side of the dam is a parking lot & picnic grove, which makes for a good meeting spot. From there, drive South on US-1 about 1 mile to MD 623 (on the right). Follow MD 623 - there's a couple places where the route turns - watch for the signs - all the way into PA. This route will take you through some "terrain" and nice sweepers, bringing you to within a stone's throw of the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Plant. (This is Delta, PA) Follow the road to the "T" at the end. There will be a stop sign. Turn left. Follow the road about 2 more miles to another "T" and turn right. Stop for gas at the Sunoco station (there aren't many gas stations around there), and pick up PA 851 across the intersection of route 74, toward Fawn Grove. Fawn Grove is the end of the ride. And there's really nothing there. PA 851 is a roller coaster, with tight turns, some off-camber, blind corners, and generally about ten miles of hidden thrills & hazards. This route features roads with limited sight lines, little runoff room and, few places to pass--be careful out there! The loop from Conowingo to Fawn Grove and back is probably 60 miles or so. Doubts as to whether you'd do the loop in an hour and a half...
