At Chittennago (10 miles after the falls) Take Rt 5 east to Canastoto, RT 13 North 1 mile, Jump on RT 90 Exit 34 go East 28 miles and Exit 31 Utica RT 12 North. This joins RT 28 North to ride through the Adirondack--many options; a neat one is to take RT 28N at Long Lake go 19 miles to a left turn 18 miles of twisties and virtually no traffic (or houses) but watch out the road can get rough. Pick up I 87 south at exit 29 and go 6 miles to exit 28 for RT 74 East this will take you past Fort Ticonderoga and the 15 minute Ferry ride across Lake George to VT. Rutland and Killington are a short ride away. |

| Adirondack State Park | NY 30 & NY 22 | John Filak - link to John's homepage. | New York Rt. 30 through Adirondack State Park - any direction between Saranac Lake and the NYThruway, about 100 miles of pure riding pleasure, and fast sport touring. Rt. 22 from about Red Hook in Duchess County all the way up to Lake Champlain - in either direction. Almost 200 miles of twisties, fast straights, occasional small towns. Mostly open farmland. This road runs along the east ridge of the Hudson River Valley with views of the Catskill Mountains to the west, the Berkshire Mountains and the Green Mountains to the east and running into the Adirondack Mountains on the northern terminus. | |
| Woodstock (Catskill Mtns) | see notes | Mike | Here is a list of roads through the Catskill Mtns Go west on Rt. 212 to Bearsville 3 mi. continue on Rt. 212 another 11 mi. and 74 corners to Mt Tremper NY. At the 4 corners go right on Rt. 40 to Phoenicia (3 mi.). In town take a right on Rt. 214 go 12 miles to intersection of Rt. 23A. Turn left and go through Hunter and take a right on Rt. 296 to Windham. Turn Left on Rt. 23 and take to Prattsville. Turn left again on Rt. 23A to Lexington and take a right onto Rt. 42. Take Rt. 42 12 miles to the intersection of Rt. 28. All roads are well maintained, smooth two lane blacktop with lots of twisties and sweepers. Watch out for deer! Mike | |
| I-90 at the Herkimer Mohawk Exit | Mohawk | Routes 5s, 51, 20 and 28 | Joe | Coming off the thruway (I90) take Exit 30 (Herkimer Mohawk Exit ) Take a left at the light after the toll booth. Veer to the right at the next light, this is route 5s West. Go through the next stop light, and take the first exit you come to ( about a mile ), this is route 51( Ilion). Take a left And just keep going straight until you leave town. You'll come to a VERY nice twisty section of road with a couple good passing zones. This has just been repaved in '99, and is is perfect condition. What your doing is going up the "gorge", along a stream, which when its real hot out is almost like swimming in the water, since the temperature is always about 60'F. Its not all that long, but its a great ride. If you continue up route 51, you'll intersect with Route 20. Take a left on Route 20, and you'll intersect with route 28 south, come straight down 28 south, back to the thruway which makes the ride a little longer, and more diverse. Nice Ride, I do it weekly Be Careful in the gorge area, as there are frequent cagers that stop along the shoulder to go swimming. There are houses along the road so you will want to pay attention, and watch for idiots cutting corners. Other than that, its a great ride. The Ride basically starts and ends in Mohawk the way I have it planned out.... Where Your taking Routes 5s, 51, 20 and 28 |
| Hammond, Rt. 37 | loop route | Rt. 37, Rt. 3, Rt. 23 and Rt. 58 | Thomas Megan | A short loop in the Thousand Islands area of Northern NY. Start on Rt. 37 in Hammond, turn south on St. Lawrence County Rt. 3. Twelve very twisty miles through Canadian Shield type granite outcrops through Rossie to the hamlet of Oxbow. Challenging two lane road with many tight corners, short sight lines, and occasionally bumpy pavement, careful! From Oxbow, north on county Rt. 23 about 7 miles to Gouverneur, NY. Nice smooth pavement ride, a few fast sweepers, watch for farm equipment on road. From Gouverneur, left on US 11, across the river, then left again on NYS Rt. 58 north. Now for 18 miles of fresh, smooth asphalt leading back to Rt. 37 at Morristown. Some tight turns, but mostly fast sweepers, and lots of them. A good bit of up and down too, as you wind through and over more big granite domes. There are a lot of straight roads in Northern NY, but these are definitely not among them! I've been riding them for 30 years, and in all that time I have hardly seen another bike, what a shame! Tom Megan, Norton 850 Commando |
