| Junction of US 250 and US 220 (approx 40 mi. NW of Stauton) | Covington | US 220 | Motorcyclist Magazine | See p. 44 of the 8/92 issue |
| Harrisonburg | Elkins, WV | US 33 | Joe Drummond | The road features tight turns, great asphalt, grades up to 9% and runs some real good sweepers combined with great tight twisties for over 50 miles. |
| Lynchburg | Buena Vista | VA 501 | sgoodno@airmail.net | Start
in Lynchburg, VA take Route 501 North ending in Buena
Vista, Va. 501 North snakes in and out of the Blue Ridge
Mountain passes, follows the St. James River and crosses
the Blue Ridge Parkway at Big Island, VA. The road is
characterized by alternating tight uphill and downhill
twisties followed by high speed sweepers. Roadways are in
excellent condition with little debris. Traffic can be
heavy on the weekends however, most autos will pull to
the side and let you pass with no problems. Also there
are very few suitable run-offs and look out for 18
wheelers crossing over the center line in the tighter
corners. For a longer ride ( 80 + miles) start in Lynchburg follow 501 North to the Blue Ridge Parkway. South on the Parkway to Route 43 to Bedford, Va. North on 221 back to Lynchburg. Route 43 is mainly downhill twisties and sweepers. Decent road condition but look out for traffic to and from the Parkway. Route 221 North is just a road to get you back to the starting point. |
| Tazewell | VA 16 | Garry Nelson |
Rt 16 between Tazewell and Marion
VA, 35 miles, good blacktop, no commercial vehicles, This road goes up & down three mountains, Clinch, Knob, and Walker Mtn. Great road, curves never stop except for a brief respite in the valleys. Good camping @ Hungry Mother State Park, Marion Va. Great Mex @ La Paloma in Marion, VA with an Army surplus store across the street to purchase what you forgot |

| Fredericksburg | Charlottesville | VA 3 & VA 20 | Kelly Kent |
At Fredericksburg head west on Rt.
3 (this is pretty much a straight rolling hill two lane highway to
warm you up for about 10 miles) you'll pass by several civil war
battle sights (including where Stonewall lost his arm!!). Rt. 3
intersects with Rt. 20 in Wilderness turn left and head south. this is
where the ride begins to pick up. As you head on the first half of Rt.
20 you'll notice the turns begin to pick up. When you reach Orange
(about 17 miles south) be sure to follow Rt. 20--you won't be sorry.
From Orange to Charlottesville it turns into a well paved back road
with as many ups and downs as twist.
Once in Charlottesville grab a bite enjoy the old town setting or college atmosphere. Get a quick rest and come back the same way its just as enjoyable. It's about an 80 mile trip one way. |
| Covington | VA 220N and Falling Spring Rd. | Austin | From Covington go north on US Rt 220N, approx. 1.5 miles out of Covington turn LEFT on Falling Spring Road. This is a lightly traveled back road through farmland. Pavement varies from very good to slightly rough. A good mix of sweepers and tight turns, most with good sight distance and little debris. Be sure to bear left about 15 mi up Falling Spring to head to Bacova, Va. Follow to end. Road ends at intersection of Rt 39 (Goshen Pass road). Time: Approx. 1 hour Ride often and minimize your risks. | |
| I-81 (VA) Exit 24 at Meadowview | VA 50/80 | Austin | Start: I 81 (Va) Exit 24 at Meadowview. Follow signs for Rt 50 / 80 aka "Hayters Gap Road". The road winds through farm country before starting it's climb through a Deal's Gap like setting. If you like technical roads, you'll love this. Rt 80 demands attention with it's off camber, decreasing radius 60-140 degree turns all while going up or down steeply. Most of the 20 or so miles has good sight distance and a reasonable shoulder. It is lightly traveled. Multiple opportunities for knee dragging. Northbound brings you to the intersection of Rt 80 and Rt 19. The smart motorcyclists continues on Rt 19 NE bound and takes Rt 16 back to Marion. Approximate time on Route 80 is 40 minutes. Ride often and minimize your risks. | |
| Covington | "dead ends" | Rt. 220 and Rt. 606 | Kory Peters | Head north on Rt. 220 out of town. It will take over a mountain called Allegany. The mountain is full of hard and light turns so take it easy if its your first time. Then after you break the top of the mountain there is a short descent into the valley below. Just before you get to the valley you roll by the George Washington fall which is very scenic. Then you ride up the valley, just as you come to the first passing lane in the valley there is a road that cuts up the side of a mountain called McGraw gap or Rt. 606. Take this road to the crest of the mountain. then take a left on the road going out across the mountain. the road leads to a airport were it dead ends at 6 miles. At first it is filled with twist and turns but the it changes and has straights stretches. plus like no one goes up there cause it just goes out to the airport and barely anyone lives along it its a great ride. It's a very scenic ride as well. |
